Rotodynamic Pumps for Nomenclature and Definitions

Standard Details

This standard serves as a normative document for nomenclature and definitions related to rotodynamic pumps across a variety of configurations and services, including those with centrifugal (radial), mixed flow, and axial flow impellers. It establishes standardized terminology for pump types and components and also includes regenerative turbine pumps, Pitot tube pumps, vertical diffuser pumps, and submersible motor pumps, both deep well and short set types, commonly classified as vertically suspended rotor and vertical overhung impeller types. These pumps may be driven by vertical electric motors or horizontal engines with right-angle gear drives and are used in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. This standard is a vital resource for pump manufacturers, specifying engineers, consultants, and end users. It ensures consistency in pump system terminology, classifications, and major components, supported by sectional and outline drawings for clarity and ease of reference.

What’s New in This Edition:
• The term suction can is now consistently used instead of suction barrel when referring to the inlet outer casing of a vertical pump. While both terms are commonly used in the industry, HI has clarified that barrel should be reserved exclusively for BB5 pump configurations. Using suction can for vertical pumps helps avoid confusion.
• A clearer distinction has been established between submersible pump types. The vertical pump type VS0 is now specifically designated as a submersible turbine pump, while the overhung type OH8 retains the designation submersible pump.
• The spelling of lineshaft has been standardized across all HI documents, replacing previous variants such as line shaft and line-shaft. This change applies only to the term lineshaft when referring to pump types; component terminology remains unchanged.
• Section 14.1.14 has been enhanced with improved construction drawings, including sectioned 3D images, where available, for each pump type, to support better visual understanding.
