REACH and the Electronics Industry Supply Chain: The Basics, the Impact, and How to Survive
REACH regulation No 1907/2006 was adopted in the EU on December 18, 2006 and came into force on June 1, 2007. REACH stands for: Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals. REACH has been adopted in response to the increase in illness caused by substances in the EU. The health hazards and environmental impact of only a few percent of chemicals is well understood with very little data on about 65%. Therefore some substances that are used in large quantities may be more dangerous than is currently thought. REACH aims to target substances used in the largest quantities and the most dangerous substances as a priority but eventually 30,000 will be tested, registered and evaluated. The most hazardous will require authorisation before they can be used and some will be banned. One of the long-term benefits of REACH will be that all substances will be thoroughly tested so that their risks will be known. It will then be possible to choose the safest option where several possibilities exist. Currently this is often not possible due to a lack of data.
